Screened Roses
Screened Roses: Another Rose Growing Question from a Rose-Works Visitor...
The Screened Roses Question Was From:First Name: Bob City: St. Petersburg Country: United States
We have an answer to the question you submitted to www.rose-works.com Your Question: “I live in West Central Florida - will roses do well if grown underneath a screened pool cage? If so, what varieties would be recommend, or do best? ” Our Answer: Screened Roses: My immediate answer was...I haven't the faintest idea , but upon further reflection there were a few points I think we could say. Direct, hot sunlight is not particularly good for roses. They tend to wilt and loose some of the richness of color in the bloom, especially the lighter colored varieties. Roses do well in the drier regions of England where much of the spring and fall is cooler and the sun is filtered through thin layers of cloud. On the other hand, roses do enjoy as much as six hours of sunlight a day in the full growing season. They are really a temperate climate plant. Screening out the full hot sun of summer may well be a good idea although I wouldn't do this for the whole growing season or even all day, every day! For one thing, like green houses, you are going to attract and concentrate flying insects such as white fly. As to what varieties to grow I would suggest the darker colors and the more robust species but the very best way would be to contact the local Rose Society in Florida and/or the local nursery, particularly those that are local rose bush suppliers. An unusual question but I hope we have provided a little guidance. If You Have A Question: Here is what to do if you have a question about roses or rose cultivation.
