Rose Petal Candles ...for Valentine's day everyday!
Rose petal candles tastefully arranged in the center of your table will create the perfect mood for the evening you have planned for your guests.
Throughout the season, you've relished the time spent in nurturing your rose garden. But the joyful satisfaction of watching closed buds open into cheerful blossoms was bittersweet with the knowledge that their delicate charm could not last forever. This particular evening however, you are thankful to have discovered a way to hold onto your roses by capturing their alluring beauty within lovely rose scented candles.
Creating Your Own Rose Petal Candles
Making rose petal candles from your own dried rose petals can be rewarding. You could in fact use freeze dried rose petals, either purchased or ones you have frozen from your own garden. Better still, use fresh petals, with the little "stems" removed. Brighter colors are better: red is best.
Here are a few simple steps to follow:
1. Choose two containers for your candles. Jelly jars, wine glasses, or deep candy dishes are all possibilities. And don't forget such kitchen items as cookie cutters for smaller candles!
2. Purchase any needed supplies. Gather together your dried rose petals, candle wax, candle containers, wax coated wicks in sustainer bases, rose scented fragrance oil, a pan for double boiling, a candy thermometer, a glue gun and a two cup measuring glass with a pour spout.
3. Heat your containers and melt your wax. To prevent your containers from cracking when hot wax is poured into them, heat them in your oven at 150 degrees. Begin by placing small chunks of wax in the glass measuring cup. Set the measuring cup in a pan of boiling water. Heat wax until it begins to melt. Bring the temperature to 170 degrees but do not exceed 180 degrees. Add 2 tablespoons of rose fragrance oil.
4. Add wicks, wax, and petals. Working with a pair of gloves, attach the wicks to the bottoms of your heated containers with your glue gun. Then, taking care not to get wax on the rims, pour a small amount of wax into the bottom of the containers then drop a few petals near the outside edges. Carefully adding wax and another layer of petals, repeat this process until wax comes up to one quarter inch from the top of the wicks. Be sure to leave a small amount of wax for step 6.
5. Center the wick and remove air bubbles. As the wax begins to harden, the wicks may settle to one side and air bubbles may form. Gently reposition the wick and poke holes with a tooth pick or skewer into the wax near the wicks to release trapped air, taking care not to touch the petals. Allow the wax to cool completely before taking the next step.
6. Top off your candles. Reheat the remaining wax to 180 degrees. The higher temperature of this wax will melt the first layer and blend well with it as you pour the second into your containers.
7. Enjoy your homemade candles, but be careful to store them well. Petals can deteriorate and lose color over time.
