1...First and foremost, miniature roses are outdoor rose bushes not indoor ones! Yes you can buy small roses from the supermarket for indoors but they rarely survive and do so much better outside. Add to this important point the fact that you should always purchase your miniature plants from a reputable rose breeder or gardening center that specializes in them: do they know anything about miniature roses and their cultivation? 2...The number one asset to growing miniature roses is direct sunlight. If they do not get enough sun throughout the day, your miniature roses will have stretched out branches and even gaps between the leaves. Obviously you want a full rose bed, which means that lighting arrangements are important. However, if you purchase your miniatures roses from a greenhouse, make sure they stay in the shade for a few days. Over the next 2 weeks you will have to baby them by gradually introducing them to sunlight. If you don't the immediate impact to sunlight can be too much for these little beauties. ![]() 4...Allow a transition period. If these roses started in a pot, don't transfer them to the ground immediately. A careful transition must be adhered to and 1 gallon black plastic pot is the perfect regimen. This will allow the roots to grow freely and if you add a little bone meal they will grow a bit faster. Eventually they will outgrow the 1 gallon pot, and you will have to transfer them to a 2 gallon option. It usually takes about 3 months. The whole transitional period is about 9 months total, and when spring rolls around your miniature roses will be ready to plant in the ground. Dig a hole that is 1x1 foot and make sure its level. Before you place them in the ground, be sure that the soil is loose. Then for the next 21 days you will need to maintain them accordingly. Whether it’s the watering, keeping the soil moist, making sure they get proper sunlight, or even covering them with mulch in case of a late frost will be important, but they are very hardy, mostly because they are grown on their own root-stock. There are many other essentials as well, but this will help you get started. Your next project may consist of miniature roses in hanging baskets (they are really good if you prune out the centers), miniature climbers, or as edging (little hedges) the borders around your home. Whatever the case may be you definitely have plenty of options. So utilize the tips we've given you and take your time. Even though miniature roses make you have plenty of patience, the beauty you create is magnificent. Just get as much knowledge as you can about growing miniature roses and the rest will take care of itself.
