Gardening Roses
...a dozen tips.

Gardening roses or gardening with roses is still a very popular pastime. Now that you're ready to create your own rose garden, where do you start? Were you thinking about starting an old European garden of roses, modern roses, or a cross-breed between them? Either way, hopefully you will be happy with the one you choose, but without proper care it won't matter. In order to keep a beautiful array of roses in your garden, it's important to have a rose gardening checklist.

A Dozen, Gardening Roses Tips

1...Probably the most important part to rose gardening is checking your PH balance. When you use this properly you will test the soil and determine what compounds will be needed to prepare your flower bed.

2...However, you should also think about the climate in your area so you put your roses in the right location. This will allow for proper light and optimal growth.

3...Once your flower bed is ready, it's time to buy your rose plant. We only recommend purchasing a good quality one because you will definitely notice the difference when you maintain a lower quality rose plant. Seriously, DO NOT compromise quality to save a few bucks. You will be disappointed when your roses bloom, if they do at all.

Gardening Roses

4...Normally the best time of year to plant your rose plants is during the early spring. While this may be true, it’s best to check with a well-known nursery. They will be able to shed some light on all the little secrets that help a rose garden in your area provide beautiful blooms. It's possible that the best planting season where you live is during mid or late spring.

5...Another part to your rose garden checklist is to make sure that you plant correctly. It's extremely important to let the roots soak for a few minutes and prune any of the root ends that are broken. Also make sure that the roots aren't exposed to any air. If they aren't isolated beneath the soil they will end up drying the root fibers.

6...Preparing the hole is important. This means you have to dig a hole a few inches wider than the root ball and deep enough so the roots can grow freely. When it's time to refill the hole, make sure you only do about 3/4 of the way. It gives you the opportunity to water the plant thoroughly. When you're finished go ahead and fill the rest of the hole up with soil and pat down firmly so the roots are covered.

7...And don't forget to use the correct tools. Sharp clean tools can make all the difference.

8...Make a plan of where you plant your rose, its full name and official color. (Check the A.R.S. Guide if you are in the U.S.) Not all roses are exactly what they say. Queen Elizabeth is a Pink but what sort of Pink?

9...Always leave the metal tag that shows the plants name, on the bush for future reference.

10..Be careful with mixed plantings, especially close to the roots of a rose bush. Most roses prefer space and no competition for soil.

11..Don't water from overhead, it will promote blackspot. Water from below and water deeply.

12..When cutting roses, always take the water to the rose and remember you have less than ten seconds once you have cut a stem, to put it into the hot water!

So there you are, some basic tips to add to your checklist. Just remember to make a rose garden checklist and try to do everything step by step.
