The Rose Growers Calendar

Twelve Months of Gardening with Roses:- What to do and when to do it!

December Rose Growing, isn't! The year comes to an end and besides the vigilance of watching for signs of weather damage and keeping beds clean, there is little left to do. Time to consider the successes of the past year and prepare the plans for the new year. It will soon be time to open up the rose beds again for spring.

DECEMBER ROSE GROWING

" What, old December's bareness everywhere! "

It's hard to find a good day to get outside in December. If you do, it's a chance to dormant spray or check that all is well in the rose bed...

Things To Do For December Rose Growing:

-Continue to defoliate if there are rose leaves still present.

-Beds should be as clean as possible so continue tidying up.

-Leave the rose hips and spent blooms on the plants over the winter for the birds to enjoy. `

You can still plant and transplant roses if the soil isn't too soggy or frozen.

-Now is a good time to consider joining or renewing a membership in rose societies in your local area and other parts of the world such as the National societies as follows:

1...the Royal National Rose Society in England:
http://www.rnrs.org

2...the American Rose Society in Shreveport, Louisiana, U.S.A.:
http://www.ars.org

3...the Canadian Rose Society in Toronto, Ontario, Canada:
http://www.canadianrosesociety.org

4...the World Rose Organization:
http://www.worldrose.org

Most groups produce a bulletin, some a magazine and there is a lot of good information to be had from reading these publications.

-Also be sure to check out the hundreds of excellent web sites dedicated to rose growing. Just go to "Google" and type in your keyword...miniature roses, or organic soils or dead heading roses for example.

-Finally it is a time for the rose gardener to rest by the fire and enjoy the holiday season whilst reading and planning the garden year to come. Read the catalogs, draw up new plans, adjust your yearly rose growers calendar and sharpen some tools, ready for the spring.

Alternatively, go photograph the roses somewhere hot...Hawaii has roses!

Time now to enjoy the celebrations of the Christmas season and look forward to a healthy, prosperous New Year (...filled with show quality rose blooms of course!)

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL ROSE SOCIETY. Our heartfelt thanks to the Vancouver Rose Society (Vancouver, Canada) and their website, for the basic structure of this series for the rose growers calendar. Some changes have been made to expand the appropriateness of the material for a North American readership and rose gardeners world wide. The Vancouver Rose Society website can be found at:
